Hair Loss: Understanding the Causes

Hair loss is frustrating and can happen for many reasons. Most of our patients can attribute their hair loss to many reasons, including:

Genetics (Androgenetic Alopecia): This is the most common cause, affecting both men and women.

Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and thyroid problems can all trigger hair loss.

Medical Conditions: Alopecia areata, scalp infections, and autoimmune diseases can cause sudden or patchy hair loss.

Medications & Lifestyle: Certain medications, nutritional deficiencies, harsh styling, and stress can contribute to hair loss.

Dr. Saxon will discuss your medical history and examine your scalp during your consultation to determine the best hair loss treatment for you.

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) is a natural substance derived from your own blood that is rich in platelets, growth factors, and other bioactive proteins. PRF is created by centrifuging a sample of your blood to concentrate the platelets and then isolating the fibrin matrix. This potent combination of growth factors and proteins promotes tissue regeneration, collagen production, and angiogenesis, making it an ideal treatment for hair restoration.
PRF injections offer several benefits for hair restoration, including:

PRF vs. PRP for Hair Growth

Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) are both popular treatments for hair restoration, each offering unique benefits and mechanisms of action. PRF contains a higher concentration of platelets, growth factors, and bioactive proteins compared to PRP, as it includes a fibrin matrix that helps sustain the release of growth factors over a longer period. This sustained release may result in more prolonged stimulation of hair follicle growth and improved tissue regeneration. While PRP is effective for stimulating hair follicles and improving scalp health, PRF’s additional fibrin matrix may offer enhanced regenerative effects.
During the PRF procedure, a small sample of your blood is drawn and processed using a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other blood components. The scalp is then numbed, and microneedling is performed on the scalp. This acts synergistically with the injection to stimulate hair growth. The PRF is then injected directly into the scalp at targeted areas of hair thinning or loss using a fine needle. The entire procedure is performed in-office and typically takes less than an hour to complete. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities immediately afterward.

PRF for Hair Restoration FAQs

Is PRF therapy safe for hair restoration?
Yes, PRF therapy is considered safe since it utilizes your blood components, minimizing the risk of allergic reactions or adverse effects.
The number of PRF sessions needed varies depending on individual factors such as the extent of hair loss and desired outcomes. Most patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart.
PRF therapy can be effective for various types of hair loss, including male and female pattern baldness, alopecia areata, and thinning hair due to aging or hormonal imbalances.
Results from PRF therapy may vary, but many patients notice improvements in hair thickness, density, and overall scalp health within a few months of treatment.
Side effects of PRF therapy are minimal and typically include mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, which usually resolves within a few days. There is no downtime, and you can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.
